The flamboyant, whimsical rococo is the most characteristic style of the 18th century. Originating in France, it also flourished in Germany. Even the Dutch were swept off their feet by this exotic style that was characterised by a preference for 'rocailles': fanciful motifs borrowed from nature. Fashion priorities were elegance and grace. Based on the 200 most beautiful pieces of furniture, woodwork, silver and gold objects, earthenware and porcelain, sculptures, drawings and engravings, wall decorations and portraits, this book is the first to provide a survey of the Dutch rococo at the highest level. Many new discoveries are presented, both in terms of previously unknown art objects as well as new attributions to a certain artist or city. The result is a book that will surprise even authorities: the Dutch rococo is shown to be more exciting, more individualistic and, in its predilection for abstraction, also more modern than was previously realised.in Nederland is especially intended for lovers of art and antiques, houses and old interiors, but also for those who are more generally interested in the history of 18th-century civilisation
