The prime objective of this book is to make medieval drama accessible, and therefore enjoyable, also to students of English as a foreign language. All too often this vital part of the curriculum is reduced to a minimum due to the barrier of Middle English. My first book on the subject, Folklore and Faith in the Cycle Plays, I was an attempt to get round this difficulty, but limited to the miracle plays of the York cycle. Its main merit is to have created an atmosphere in which to present key passages in the context of the plays themselves. The interest shown by the students, and the insight it gave them into appreciating English drama and culture as a whole, made me wonder, why not give them the experience of knowing and even performing a whole play? of feeling for themselves the difference between a miracle play, a morality and an interlude? and the evolution from one to the other?
