Like Paris, Vienna and Berlin, around 1900 Prague was one of the most important centres for the rise of modern art. Because of its central location in Europe, the artists who lived and worked in this city were well informed about the most recent developments and innovations, which they adopted with great enthusiasm. There was a particularly lively exchange of ideas with Paris. Many Czech artists lived for a shorter or longer time in the French capital and contributed to its exciting cultural climate. Think for instance of the famous and very influential posters of Alfons Mucha. Back in Prague, the artists blended the inspiration they had found in Paris with influences from Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe, so that in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Czech art gained a completely distinctive character.
Praagse schilderkunst 1890-1939 shows examples of the work of 25 painters, sculptors and other artists. Stylistically, the works in this book are related to movements such as impressionism, symbolism, expressionism, cubism and constructivism, and most of them are from the collection of the Czech National Gallery in Prague.
