Emil Nolde is considered one of the most important Expressionist painters. This publication presents an overview of his central works, including landscapes, scenes from Berlin and portraits. One of the book's focal point is his late cycle of "unpainted pictures", perhaps Nolde's most intriguing and least well-documented works, created during the Nazi regime.

During the Third Reich, Nolde's work was regarded as "degenerate art" and he was prohibited from painting. More than one thousand small-scale watercolours infused with fantastical elements and created entirely in secret constitute his "unpainted pictures" from the early 1940s. In this volume, they are complemented by some of the finest, most colourful paintings of his prolific career. With more than one hundred full-colour reproductions and numerous informative essays, this book traces the development of Nolde's distinctive style and technique, shedding light on his artistic beginnings as a woodcarver as well as influences such as Gauguin and Munch.
