Continuing the tradition of exhibitions which the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art (mac LYON) devotes to 'distant' artistic scenes like China (Le Moine et le Démon in 2004), India (Indian Highway in 2011), and Brazil (Imagine Brazil in 2014), Open Sea, presented at the mac LYON from April 17th to July 12th 2015, is an invitation and an opportunity for visitors to discover the state of contemporary creative art in Southeast Asia.
The young city-state of Singapore is a cultural and economic crossroads. It is also a unique platform in Southeast Asia for art and a phenomenal artistic scene is emerging there. The exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures, installations, performances, videos, and photographs by 31 artists from 11 different countries. Some of the works on display have been chosen from more than 300 pieces in the large collection of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM); others were selected from the extremely dynamic Singapore Biennale. In addition, there are new performances and new creations. The exhibition is the fruit of a longstanding cooperation between the SAM, the Singapore Biennale, and the NHB (National Heritage Board - responsible for National museums and Heritage institutions in Singapore).
The bilingual catalogue presents the entire exhibition, with a unique iconography and texts by Thierry Raspail and Tan Boon Hui, as well as artists' notices for each of the 31 artists.
