Filippo Baldinucci's Notizie dei professori del Disegno da Cimabue in qua has been described by most art historians as the most significant and influential attempt to produce a sequel to Vasari's Lives of the Artists, of the late 17th century. The noted English scholar Philip Pouncey (1910 - 1990), the foremost expert of his time in the attributional studies of Old Master prints and drawings, produced a detailed manuscript index of Baldinucci's Notizie for his own personal use that fully met the standards of comprehensiveness, and which has remained unpublished until now, although its publication has long been felt overdue by many scholars. The index comprises approximately 8500 hand-written entries, roughly 6000 of which list names of artists and their subjects, while the remaining 2500 refer to location. The publication of The Pouncey index will prove an essential tool to art historians, students and scholars alike.
