Erich Mendelsohn (1887-1953) è stato definito l'unico architetto rivoluzionario della sua generazione. Nel volume viene ripercorsa la produzione del grande progettista a partire dai famosi "schizzi" e dalle realizzazioni in Germania prima della fuga seguita all'avvento del regime nazista, che fanno di lui il più alto esponente della corrente architettonica espressionista europea. Vengono quindi illustrate le limpide opere del periodo "palestinese", con le quali contribuisce attivamente al processo di costruzione di quello che nel 1948 diverrà lo Stato di Israele. Il percorso si conclude con i pacati edifici comunitari, oltreché con le residenze del periodo americano.
