Maria Paola Castiglioni's Cadmos-serpent en Illyrie. Itinéraire d'un héros civilisateur uses the tools of history, archaeology and cultural anthropology to create a multi-layered picture of Cadmus anf his variuos images as a hero, both as a killer of serpenst and as a erpent himself. The complexity of the tales surrounfing the mythical founfìder of Thebes allows the author to investigate the mechanism through wich such myths are developed and used. Her special focus is on the far-western reaches of the Balkans, where Cadmus as a serpent appears ad an identitary figure, a symbol of strenght and civilization.
The volume, published in French with an English summary, is the fouteenth in a series based on dissertation completed by doctoral researchers who have partecipated in CLIOHRES.net, a network of Excellence for History supported by the european Commission through its Doctorate General for Research's Sixth Framework Programme.
