Diladdarno. A word which pronounced like that, in one breath, means little or nothing for who is not a Florentine. "Di là d'Arno" or "Oltrarno" means the city beyond the river. Almost a magic formula which sums up in one body, roads, squares and buildings, people and work in that part of Florence which unwinds along the left bank of the river. Diladdarno is not just "a place". It is the part of the city that still today conserves the more authentic soul of what it means to be a Florentine: workers' houses, small shops, artisans, humanity laboriously preserved from the onslaught of tourism. With this book it is the intention of the authors to fill a gap in the bibliography on Florence which includes no text dedicated specifically to the Oltrarno. An embracing overview which goes beyond the universally known monumental centre of the city in order to deal with - for the first time in an overall and non-specialist way - one of the most evocative and least known parts of Florence. This is a book which was created and conceived as a way of 'getting an idea' of the thousand and one facets which make up the other face, hidden and still complete, of one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
