Paris Bordone (1500-1571) was one of the major Venetian painters of 16th Century. Titian's apprentice, he became soon his formidable competitor. First imitator of Giorgione's painting, then he oriented his production towards Savoldo, Palma, Dosso, Lotto, Romanino, Moretto, but towards Rafael, Michelangelo, Parmigianino, Bronzino and Vasari, too, turning into an international Mannerist, who was able to achieve the luxury european market of his time thanks to his heroic and aristocratic painting. Bordone worked for patricians and functionaries of the Republic of Venice, furthermore for Lombard and Genoese gentlemen, for German merchants and Spanish, French and Polish nobles. Bordone's paintings were in great demand among princes and kings, and they have been part of the most important and prestigious collections of the past. Nowadays they are exhibited in the main museums and private collections all around the world.
The catalogue raisonné of this great Renaissance master is absolutely a new art book release. Two exhaustive essays, concerning the critical success and his life and works, follow the introduction. It includes three parts dedicated to the paitings (245 works), two to drawings (54 works) and one to lost works (135). The sections include Old and New Testament, Saints and christian legends, ancient fairy tales, allegoric landscapes, portraits, ideal beauties. Illustrations of the catalogue are the result of a search in archives, libraries, museums and private collections owning documents, pictures and works of Bordone.
