In the past, the Estense Library, with its original Estense collection and the Muratori and Tiraboschi endowments, possessed a considerable collection of editions of Dante Alighieri's "Divina Commedia" or other works. Yet, with the recent acquisition of the Muzzarelli collection and of other important private libraries, the Biblioteca's patrimony dedicated to Italy's most famous poet has become of great importance. It includes the "Dante Estense", an illuminated manuscript of the 14th century with a commentary by Cristoforo Landino, manuscripts with notes by Castelvetro or Tassoni, and printed illustrated editions of the 1500s up to present day that have engaged the talents of the best known artists of the 19th and 20th centuries (from Dore' to Rossetti, Dali' to Guttuso). Seven centuries of Italian and international publishing on Dante is documented in this book and the bibliographic exhibition held in the Biblioteca Estense throughout the year 2000.
