'Measure' is the key to the approach followed by the Paris studio ECDM architectes in work which plays upon relations and scale, upon the interaction of nature, things and people. Headed by Emmanuel Combarel and Dominique Marrec, the studio has developed its own wide-ranging vocabulary, in which nuances are achieved through respect of an architectural syntax that follows very precise rules. The results are a number of project designs that are apparently very different in their appearance and choice of materials and yet are all predicated upon the same desire for rational solutions which do not bow to prevailing fashions. The 25 designs and completed projects illustrated here are being brought together in a single volume for the first time.
And in recounting the history of ECDM architectes, they also enable us to perceive and identify new aspects of the environment around us.
Embodying a perfectly 'measured' approach, they are an example of how can we act upon our world without imposing upon it.
