The main themes in his work are people and animals, which he depicts in a dazzling manner. His legendary technique and his often limited use of colour make his work much sought after. The artist's portraits of animals, painted in natural poses, are sensitive and touching, with certain elements merely suggested by an outline. His portraits of elderly people are wonderful observations, in which the vulnerability of old age is poignantly depicted. Pander also makes extraordinary drawings and paintings of industrial subjects like harbours, railways, building excavations and bridges. Then there are his painted monumental works, including various murals, of which the one for the Kaatje bij de Sluis restaurant in Blokzijl is among his very best.
This book is Part 11 in the series of monographs by the Drents Museum on contemporary figurative artists.
This limited edition is bound, numbered and signed and contains an original, signed etching by Pieter Pander.
