The design for the Gemeentemuseum, which was built in 1933-1935, is the last work of the famous architect H.P. Berlage, who died on August 12th, 1934. Due to its many innovations, it has long been counted among the most modern museums in the world. The director of the museum at that time, H.E. van Gelder, also had a great impact on the design. It gave him a chance to realise his ideals, reacting against the prevailing late 19th century museological conceptions. This publication, which makes the complex matter accessible to a wide audience, pays detailed attention to the design, construction and initial arrangement of the museum's collections. It also gives an impression of the renewals the museum underwent throughout the decades, both to the building itself, as well as on the field of collection management. Furthermore, it gives a complete run-down of the most recent restoration, the largest restoration of a young monument in Holland so far. It has become an exemplary restoration to many future restorations of young monuments.
