A particular itinerary to discover Orvieto and its extraordinary and spectacular Cathedral with an exceptional guide: Maurizio. A book for young readers, with illustrations by Martina Congiu, which help to reveal even to the little ones, the history of the Umbrian city and its symbol known throughout the world. Maurizio, the automaton who, from the top of the 20-metre tower from which he seems to observe the entire historic center of Orvieto, leads the reader by the hand through the history that has given fame and beauty to Orvieto: from the construction of the Cathedral and its evolutions over the centuries, to the symbology of the "del Maurizio" tower, emblem of the city. The tower was built by the Opera del Duomo between 1347 and 1348 to house a large clock which was to serve to mark the time of the construction site of the cathedral of the Duomo with the work shifts. The mechanism included the bronze automaton and the bell, which were placed on top of the tower: the automaton, dressed like a medieval character, was given the name of "Maurizio" over time, which derives from the term mauricio which indicated the building under construction. These and other marvels are illustrated and told in this publication which explores the iconography and history of one of the masterpieces of central Italy's Gothic architecture in a simple and direct way and which, like a real tourist guide, allows the reader to go around "the square of wonders" which houses the main monuments of Orvieto: from the Cathedral to the Papal Palaces, from the Bishop's Palace to the one that houses the headquarters of the Opera del Duomo in a glance that enraptures and captures the tourist for its beauty. Maurizio tells the story of the buildings surrounding the square, in addition to the Cathedral, and how they were built, clarifying the different meanings and the different functions they perform and have performed. The pages of the book close with a very useful Glossary which serves to explain in simple and clear words the technical terms that the young reader encounters while reading
