This explains the success that large repertories of paintings and decorations in general have met with. However, the frame sector was missing from this existing body of works. The last ten years have seen the appearance of specific publications, which have investigated the frame from different, angles; historical, stylistic and environmental, thereby establishing the current status of this sector. Following on from the work undertaken with the publication of the previous seven catalogues, I feel that the time is right for a wider and more articulated exploration.
This photographic repertory serves as an immediate cognitive support, a map of the frame through the times and places which have most contributed to the creation of the golden age through the exchange of cultures. The choice of images used is the result of research carried out in the worlds of the antiques market and private collecting, thus creating a selective anthology of significant value. The criterion used was to create a general overview of the typologies in use throughout the different centuries, identifying the different situations of the times, whilst attempting to give the complete work balance so as to render it a fast yet convincing source to consult.
