The second edition of Fundamentals of European Banking Law provides an exhaustive and updated analysis of European Union banking legislation, especially that concerning the Banking Union and its three pillars. The handbook focuses on the essential concepts of bank and banking, the European Union pieces of hard and soft law governing this subject matter and, in particular, the freedom of establishment of credit institutions and that to provide services, banking supervision, the management of bank crises, and depositors' protection. Particular attention is paid to the role of the EU institutions and authorities in the adoption and enforcement of the relevant acts. This second edition also analyzes the most recent amendments to EU banking legislation, that is, the "Banking Package" of 2019, the Investment Firms Directive, and the Investment Firms Regulation. Moreover, it encompasses both a detailed analysis of the most critical case law and a punctual examination of the most significant bank crises in EU countries that occurred in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis.
