His book features the first complete catalogue of Italian Drawings from the XV century in the Collections of the Kupferstich-Kabinett - one of the most ancient and richer collections of works on paper, founded in 1720 by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony. This important book - published on the occasion of the exhibition in Florence at the Dutch Institute for Art History (14 September- 2006) - not only offers an overview of the taste of the Princely court in matters of collectorship, it also gives a significant insight on Italian graphic arts of the early Renaissance that includes preparatory drawings and sketches, as well as drawings from models. Among the artists represented are many of the great masters of the time: Gozzoli, Lippi, Botticelli, Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, Fra Bartolomeo, Pinturicchio, Signorelli, Stefano da Verona, Costa, Francia, Carpaccio. The author - Lorenza Melli - is a research scholar for the Dresden Museums and she has conducted a scrupulous cataloguing of all the extant drawings, circa 43, described in great detail, many of which are unpublished before, and has produced a volume rich in new attributions in which she faces several problems of conservation as well as techniques, styles and functions resulting in an overall comprehension of the artists' creative procedures. Beautifully illustrated with new colour photographs, many of which are reference photographs the volume is supplemented with bibliography and indexe
