Landscape was born when man stopped considering himself part of nature: it then became nature's landscape transformed by culture, a palimpsest of progressive cultural transformations and signs of man incorporated from creation. In western art, it was only with the advent of modernity that landscapes, originally mere backgrounds, become subjects of painting. In Carlo Modesti's photographs you can see environments redirected, but not cancelled by human activity. But the particular work on nature that he undertakes is the construction of his inner landscape. For Modesti to embrace with the eye means awareness, introspection, action. Never contemplation. Carlo has a gift for finding without having to search: it is serendipity that triggers the mechanism.
