This publication gathers together for the first time thirteen towns of Tuscany which experienced a medieval period rich in valuable and special artistic and historical evidence.
The criterion adopted was to choose those towns with highly interesting features because they have preserved a particular layout and numerous medieval structures and also because they were bestowed with the dignity of a city, being the see of a bishop.
Besides recounting the medieval history of each town, things and places have been highlighted which are often considered of minor importance with respect to the standard ones reported on the most specialized guide books.
Among these, there are the small churches, the tower-houses, the private buildings, the town walls and thei gates and the monumental fountains.
Beyond the methodological approach, this publication represents a pleasant and highly-instructive work, provided with a set of photos of high standard and of high documentary value.
