Jessurun de Mesquita was one of the most important graphic artists of the first half of the twentieth century. In the genre of woodcuts in particular he gave a strong impulse to graphic arts in the Netherlands, especially through his teaching position at the Haarlem School of Applied Arts, where he worked for many years. He trained various graphic artists there, the most famous of whom is, without a doubt, M.C. Escher (1898-1972).
De Mesquita worked both in applied arts and in fine arts. His fine art work includes a wide range of prints and drawings of people and animals, but he also produced innumerable drawings and prints with representations which are often enigmatic; these works, sometimes referred to as 'Sensitivist', constitute an intriguing part of his oeuvre.
This monograph contains both a general description of the life and work of De Mesquita and a complete catalogue of his large oeuvre of graphic work, comprising about 450 items.
