Sam Drukker is undoubtedly one of today's most remarkable young artists. He was brought up in Assen, from where he enrolled at Academie Minerva in Groningen, taking lessons from teachers such as Matthijs R246;ling. After graduating, he soon developed his own characteristic style, with its typical mix of broadly yet skilfully-painted planes and untouched sections of canvas. In this way he manages to create tension between the realism of the depiction and the abstract value of the composition as a whole. Drukker almost always paints human figures, often nudes that he prefers to show full-length and life-size. He is also much in demand as a portraitist, completing a commission in 1996 for Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst of a portrait litho of Queen Beatrix. In this richly illustrated book his works is divided thematically into portraits, nudes, women and boxers, while tracing the development of this unique painter.
