Paulus Potter (1625-1654) developed into the most important painter of animal pieces. He owes his fame to his monumental piece of art called 'Portret van een jonge stier' ('Portrait of a young bull'). Apart from animal paintings the artist also liked farm scenes. 'De grote boerderij' ('The big farm', 1649, to be found in the Hermitage) is without any doubt his great masterpiece and could be seen as a summing up of his whole work. In this first monograph on Paulus Potter one can get acquainted with the unsuspected qualities of this 'animal painter' of the Golden Age.
