Methodical approach to the restoration of historic architecture summarises a considerable part of the scientific and didactic work carried out in these years by Prof. Calogero Bellanca and his architect collaborators Oliva Muratore, Alessandro Pergoli Campanelli and Marco Riccardi at the University of Rome. The book presents the historical, conceptual and operational aspects of restoration, opening with an article on the current trends in Europe accompanied by appropriate clarifications on terminology. Compared to the Italian edition of 2008, this English edition has updated the bibliography, and added illustrations and drawings that allow more in-depth study of the subject. In the three sections that compose the book, topics are articulated in three lengthy chapters, each including a number of themes. Each part is given maximum independence and completeness, and the treatment of the subject is guaranteed as if it were a single lecture. The aim of the book is to facilitate the approach to complex problems of studying historical architecture in order to arrive, with perfect consciousness, to the restoration project; to stimulate a serene reflection on arguments that are even in their own definition sometimes subject to misunderstanding such as restoration, rehabilitation, reuse or maintenance, ripristino, and yet others. The survey drawings produced during the courses run by Prof. Bellanca show high quality of in-depth analytical and scientific studies, sustained by a patient and meticulous approach to architectural, environmental and historical-artistic heritage. These are enriched by a careful research on the sources and their systematic comparison with the reality of architecture investigated from time to time.
