This volume presents the critical edition of the yet unpublished Littera de bono animae by the Franciscan friar Cosmarius de Verona. The work, datable to 1306, was transmitted by a single manuscript, the codex 325 of the 'Città di Arezzo' Library. The work is the only remaining part of the correspondence between the Veronese friar Cosmarius and Blessed Rainaldus de Concoregio, Archbishop of Ravenna in the age of Dante (1303-1321): at the time of his election to the prestigious episcopal chair of Ravenna, Rainaldus had addressed to the friar Cosmarius, lector in theology, to ask for spiritual advice and guidelines for his new and most demanding ministry. The introduction attempts to reconstruct the cultural environment of the Veronese convent of San Fermo, to which belonged Cosmarius, and presents a biographical profile of Archbishop Rainaldus, known for his close relationship with the Franciscans (he played a role in the preparatory works concerning the declaration Exivi de paradiso and he consecrated the Chapel of the Stigmata annexed to La Verna Sanctuary); Rainaldus is also remembered for the wisdom and indulgence that he demonstrated in the trial against the Templars of northern Italy. The work of Cosmarius, which is a wide compilation from the great commentary on the Psalms by Saint Augustine, also constitutes a precious testimony to the predilection for Augustinian theology and exegesis in the Franciscan schools between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
