How do the arts, the essential language of incompressible diversity, impossible to systemise, inexhaustible, the tool enabling individuals to express their differences, react to an increasingly globalised world? What is it that the arts will salvage from identities which have often concealed a closed attitude with regard to the new, to fear of confrontation or to injustices? And on the other hand, what will the arts recuperate from the differences which are used increasingly to refer to people, ideas and images living and spread in every corner around the world? The theme of the second Valencia Biennial, under the direction of Luigi Settembrini, is “the Art of being a City”, the city as a polyphonic urban space. This can be a good point of view from which to try to answer some of these questions. The artists invited (more than 150) along with the most innovative creators on the international scene will attempt to do so.
