Jason Martin is one of the most important of the socalled Young British Artist generation of painters. His work has been exhibited widely around the world, including in the infamous Sensation exhibition of Charles Saatchi. His work extends the language of monochrome and colour field painting from Malevich to Ryman, with a physicality that brings new life to the surface of the painting. Partly-expressive and partly-minimal, the work is made for the most part by dragging the paint across the surface of the surface to produce rich textures and optical resonances. Whilst always resisting the pictorial, Martin's paintings betray the history of their making the viewer can always see the process and journey that the artist has made across the painting.
