Created by Giulio di Gropello, the program combines the presence of two among the most important institutions of international contemporary art: the PS1 Contemporary Art Center and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The program gets to the sixth and final edition, watching the art of the new millennium. Through the years, a total of 1,354 artists have participated in the competition.
The authoritative independent panels- composed of the most famous and appreciated Italian art critics and renewed every two years to guarantee the highest plurality of opinions-have made strict choices: a total of 44 artists among whom-year after year-an American panel has chosen an artist who, thanks to the award, has been able to live and work in New York for a year. The volume documents the activity of the award from its beginning to the present and gathers the works created by 44 finalists, including them in the general context of the events of Italian art during the last decade thanks to exhaustive and sharp introductory essays.
