The birth of a new journal is usually justified by the necessity to occupy not much frequented spaces, or frequented in open order, in the outline of the scientif research. Clearly, the claim of "Quaderni" is not this one. Indeed, they are born from the purpose to provide the new Istituto di Studi sulle Civiltà Italiche e del Mediterraneo Antico of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (born three years ago from the fusion of the Istituto per l'Archeologia etrusco-italica and the Istituto per la Civiltà fenicia e punica) of an editorial instrument able to receive and transmit the pledge to project its own researches on the wider background of the ancient mediterranean horizon. Besides, the Institut commits to these new "Quaderni" the task to offer, in the dialogue with the scientific community, an external projection of its own image and vocation: almost the print of the 'disciplinary' identity of a field of the historical and antiquity studies that now the universitary system tends to separate in frail projects and to dissolve in dangerous subsidiary elements as to purposes which, however dignified, are not proper to research.
