When Renzo Titone's Psicolinguistica Applicata appeared in Italy, the scope of general psycholinguistics covered three main areas: the psychology of bilingualism, the psychology of language acquisition and language teaching, and the psychology of translation. In the last thirty years, these areas have been enriched thanks to links with similar fields of study such as theoretical linguistics, semiotics, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, educational psychology, neuropsychology, sociolinguistics, language teaching and information theory.
The range of contributions pertinent to applied psycholinguistics has become more and more diversified. This now includes research on language acquisition which places particular emphasis on environmental conditions and educational implications, research on pathological as well as normal language acquisition, on bi- or multilingual as well as monolingual acquisition, not to mention research on the teaching and acquiring of languages whatever the use the individual may need to put them to, including vocal or sign languages, first, second, foreign, heritage, ancient languages, or purely formal languages, and at every phase of life, from infancy to old age.
The "applied" psycholinguistics is the analysis of interaction in everyday contexts. Translation, too, is still in line with applied psycholinguistics since it is one of its traditional areas, but today it has received renewed impulse from a thousand new stimuli deriving from an increased demand for multilingualism and a series of more sophisticated technological possibilities.
The Rivista di Psicolinguistica Applicata, addresses psychologists, linguists, language teachers, therapists and language specialists of all kinds as well as anthropologists, sociologists and information theory scientists among others.
