In the course of ten years 5.5 designers have created a personal universe of objects with a quite original design approach which combines intuition, logic, creativity and playfulness with a certain consistency.
The volume is ideated as a timeline; the reading of their work is therefore not based on their most famous and appreciated objects, but on certain dates that have been especially important to them.
10 dates, connected to 10 "first times", form the stages of a journey in time which in addition to marking moments that have been important, instructive and crucial to their career, allow the reader to imagine him or herself in their shoes, seeing things with their eyes and understanding the hows and whys of their objects and their success. Beginning with their first activities and their first "creation", they ascend step by step to the top of the design world, passing through their first official contract, their first industrial production, their first collaboration with a luxury brand, and other "first times" which have led 5.5 designers to celebrate their first 10 years of design.
The monograph, which is being published in two versions, an Italian/English and a French/English one, paints a comprehensive picture which helps one to understand the design approach of the presented authors.
A treatise by Laura Andreini introduces the "significances" of the 10 dates and the selection of the works, which are amply described through images, drawings, sketches and short texts. The volume is completed by biographic notes and a complete summary of the works.
5.5 designers is a design studio started up in 2003 by Vincent Baranger, Jean-Sébastien Blanc, Anthony Lebossé, and Claire Renard. Their first project, "Réanim", had a strong impact in the design scene. Far from focusing only on shaping objects, the 5.5 designers force themselves to a conceptual rigour and a permanent questioning on what their designer status is. Therefore, they are standing in each of their creation for honest and accessible consumption alternatives, which imply a truly will to sublimate the ordinary. Because of this approach, brands and editors, from luxury to mainstream ones, (Nespresso, Baccarat, LaCie, Oberflex, Bernardaud, Centre Pompidou, SABZ, La Corbeille...) ask them to design products and sceneries for their spaces.
