Declared by Unesco to be part of the World Heritage, Modena Cathedral is one of the noblest witnesses to Romanesque architecture and sculpture in Italy. It was this building that inaugurated a flourishing period in the cultural and civic life of Modena. Thanks to the architect Lanfranco and to the Campionese Masters, Italian architecture acquired a new style, based on a sober harmonious articulation of volume and space, while the sculpture of Wiligelmo and his followers, with its strong and complex forms, achieves a touching narrative ingenuity and an extraordinary expressive power.
