This book tells the story of the condition of childhood in Italy from the late nineteenth century up to the present, going beyond the commonplace concepts that all too often condition any discussion regarding children and young people. It is a book that will intrigue and interest the young as well as adults with its pictures depicting the vitality, joy, curiosity and infinite resources of the child, without however slighting the more painful and negative aspects of the condition of the very young. The story is told by providing a brief history of the condition of childhood and the gradual affirmation of the rights of the child, from the late 1800s to the present, as depicted in the history and evolution of the photographic ‘narrative'. The pictures offer various interpretations in line with some of the great traditional themes bound to the fundamental rights of the child – education, health, family, play – on the basis of what was sanctioned in the UNO convention of 1989.
