Nicolò di Liberatore is still known by the name Alunno, given to him by Vasari. He was the son-in-law of the painter Pietro Mazzaforte with whom he did his earliest work. After executing paintings for the capella di Santa Marta in Santa Maria in Campis in Foligno, Alunno was very active in the decoration of churches in nearby towns, including Assisi, Perugia and Montelpare. His early style was influenced by the Florentine painters Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli; later influences include Vivarini and Crivelli, but Alunno's style, as presented by Vasari, was of a completely original character.
