It can be said without exaggeration that the work of David Smith is seen in the United States as the work of probably the most important sculptor of the 20th century, whereas it is known in Europe to a mere handful of an intellectual elite. The reasons for this situation are being looked at from different angles through various articles in this book.
Undoubtedly, showing David Smith's works in Europe is one of those rare opportunities to experience the work of one of the great masters by making an entirely new discovery.
For the opening of the exhibition in Germany the David Smith Estate made works available for the first time and allowed part of the artist's production to be exhibited which is almost never released for exhibitions.
This catalogue presents David Smith in a way that has so far not even been seen in the United States.
