When the Augarten porcelain manufactory was founded in 1923, its declared goal was 'to produce wares with a pronounced artistic character, with the aim of carrying the good reputation of Austrian manufacturing into foreign lands'. Most of the porcelain designers were graduates of and teachers at the influential Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna and also working for the Wiener Werkstätte. Sculptures, vases and table ware were designed with a stylish simplicity, as elegant expressions of their times. This volume presents a selection of famous and rare Augarten porcelain figures from the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting their contemporary fashions and music scene. Designs by the renowned architects Josef Hoffmann and Otto Prutscher, and examples dating from the 1950s by Ursula Klasmann add to the sophisticated beauty of Vienna porcelain "from the shores of the Danube".
