Writing about the art history of the 17th and 18th centuries is simply impossible without making a study of the role played by classical antiquity during this period. Both the visual artists and architects of this period were consistently inspired by the examples of Greek and Roman art as well as the classical traditions that were relived during the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy. The Netherlandish Yearbook for History of Art 33 contains a number of studies written by Dutch art historians who focus on the effect of these classical traditions. Examples of these effects include the reclassification of groups and movements in 17th century painting, the effect of sculptures dating from classical antiquity on 17th century artists, and the great importance of academies at the end of the 17th and 18th centuries.
