The work of Charlotte Salomon has been described and depicted by many since the seventies. However, the complete story of Leben ? oder Theater? - almost 800 gouaches in all - has been published in colour only once. By popular demand, a convenient and stout new volume of this complete story is now issued, with an introduction that makes use of the latest facts and data that have become known since the seventies. Charlotte Salomon (1917-1943) was a painter from Berlin who fled Nazi Germany in 1939 and spent the last years of her life at her grandparents' in the south of France. When her grandmother committed suicide, it led Charlotte to paint her dramatized autobiography in an extensive series of gouaches. In this autobiography, all the people that were important to her are brought to life in a special way: her father, her stepmother Paula Lindberg, the singing-teacher Alfred Wolfsohn, her fellow students and teachers at the Arts Academy, her grandparents. The original gouaches are in the possession of the Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam.
